Very unique property in Cusco: a colonial palace built on top of the foundations of an inca palace. Location is good: although not right in the center of the old town, it’s a gentle 10 minute walk to Plaza de Armas, and is also right next to the Qorikancha, one of Cusco’s most important archeological sites. The communal areas are very nice and cozy, although rooms tend to be a bit dark. Free coca tea is available in the lobby to help with altitude sickness. We were upgraded to a junior suite, which featured high ceilings, four-poster bed and colonial décor and looked very unique, like staying in a castle. There was a separate dressing area, and the bathroom was on the small side, but they were probably constrained by the building’s original design, so that was fine. Our travel companions were in a deluxe room, which was standard sized and comfortable, but also featured a walk in wardrobe. Staff was generally friendly, with a special mention to concierge Lino, and Carlos at the door. Breakfast was good, and served in the restaurant from 4:30AM catering to early risers on a day trip to Machu Picchu; nevertheless, it runs through 10:00AM. We were not able to sample dinner, but apparently their cuy (guinea pig) is reputed to be one of the best in Cusco. We were only here for one night, but I would definitely stay here again.
